Career Satisfaction and Career vs Personal Life Satisfaction

Career satisfaction and career versus personal life satisfaction were measured on a five-point scale with 1 = very dissatisfied and 5 = very satisfied. Satisfaction data is presented by gender, total years admitted to practice, type of employment, area of private practice, and level of employment. Career versus personal life satisfaction was not measured in the 1994 survey.

Gender : Overall, Oregon attorneys rated their legal career satisfaction at 3.6 and both males and females rated their career satisfaction at 3.6. These ratings compare to 3.5 in 1994. The regional data indicates slightly more variability in ratings among females than males. Ratings for career versus personal life satisfaction were somewhat lower with 3.4 overall, 3.4 for males, and 3.3 for females.

Overall, the career satisfaction ratings range from 3.4 to 3.8. In 1994, the ratings ranged from 3.3 to 4.0 with most of the ratings in the 3.3 to 3.5 range. Regional data exhibits greater variability. Ratings for career versus personal life satisfaction were somewhat lower.

For career satisfaction, judges/hearings officers reported the highest ratings overall (4.0) and in all regions except for the Upper Valley and Lower Valley. Career versus personal life satisfaction ratings follow similar patterns with slightly lower ratings. For both measures of satisfaction, private practice reports the lowest satisfaction ratings overall and in most regions.

This data has a much greater range of ratings than any of the other analyses of satisfaction. Overall, part-time lawyers due to lack of legal work have the lowest satisfaction rating at 2.7. This was also true for all regions of the state where data was available. For career versus personal life satisfaction, part-time lawyers due to lack of legal work reported higher ratings of 3.1 overall. Retired lawyers reported the highest satisfaction ratings overall of 4.1 and 4.2, respectively.
