EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – Public Defender Services of Lane County, Inc. (PDSLC) is seeking an executive-level attorney with demonstrated leadership, legal, and management skills to serve as its Executive Director. The position’s anticipated starting date is August 22, 2016. PDSLC is a nonprofit law firm located in Eugene, Oregon that provides public defense services to indigent individuals. PDSLC provides these services under a contract with the State of Oregon’s Office of Public Defense Services (OPDS). The Executive Director is hired by, and reports to, a Board of Trustees. PDSLC has 35 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $3 million. The Executive Director assures that indigent individuals in criminal and other contracted cases receive high quality legal services, manages PDSLC’s day-to-day operations, negotiates and oversees development and administration of PDSLC’s annual budget and contract with OPDS, and conducts financial oversight and supervision of professional and support staff. The Executive Director is expected to carry a small caseload and give special attention to difficult cases. In addition, the Executive Director is PDSLC’s chief spokesperson and its primary representative and liaison with the Oregon legislature, the judiciary and courts, and state and local public safety and criminal justice agencies. In this capacity, the Executive Director demonstrates a commitment to public defense policy and practice and the ability to build successful relationships within the public defense community. Minimum qualifications: 1. A Juris Doctor degree, membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar, and the ability to practice law in Oregon. 2. A minimum of 6 years of experience as a practicing lawyer. 3. Knowledge and understanding of public defense services including juvenile, adult, and civil commitment cases.4.Strong communication skills. 5. Demonstrated leadership or the potential for leadership. Desired attributes include: 1.Demonstrated experience managing a diverse workforce consisting of attorneys, investigators, and administrative staff. 2. Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate with local judges, criminal and public safely representatives, state agencies, the Public Defense Services Commission, and advocacy groups.
