Advanced Editing: Strategies to Shorten Legal Documents
Thursday, Dec. 29, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
3 general CLE or practical skills credits
Oregon State Bar Center, Tigard
Court rules often limit the length of legal documents in terms of the total number of pages, words or characters. Drafts of legal documents often run long, and they can be difficult to trim down to the prescribed length, especially when deadlines loom. Regardless of your writing style, this seminar will provide an approach and the techniques to shorten text quickly. OSB member and author Sandra Oster will demonstrate editing strategies on a variety of legal documents from her ABA publication “Writing Shorter Legal Documents: Strategies for Faster and Better Editing.” In the last half-hour of the seminar, Oster will demonstrate how text can be very quickly shortened with her methods using documents she has not seen in advance. Seminar attendees who want their documents shortened should bring them on a flash drive in Word format. Attendees are responsible for ensuring that the documents do not contain any confidential information.
