OVER 7,600 OREGON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS dropped out last year. They are significantly more likely to end up in the criminal justice system than those who graduate. The Multnomah Bar Association Dropout Prevention Program is seeking volunteers for the 2008-2009 school year. Attorneys participating in the program visit Multnomah county middle and high schools for one 50-minute class period to speak with students about the decision to pursue education instead of paths that lead to crime. These discussions are guided by a short documentary featuring interviews with young, convicted felons that explain how their decision to drop out of school has led to other poor decisions and, ultimately, incarceration. Students in past years have enjoyed both the documentary and the opportunity for lively conversation with attorneys. If you would like to participate in the program, please contact Theodora Lenihan at (503) 593-1062 or theolenihan@gmail.com for more information.
