Peter Dassow has been appointed as an assistant attorney general in the business transactions section of the general counsel division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Dassow received his J.D. from Willamette University. He then served as government affairs coordinator and as policy and legal services attorney for the Oregon School Boards Association.

Dirk Pierson has been appointed as a senior assistant attorney general in the torts section of the trial division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Pierson received his J.D. from Willamette University. He has been in private practice in Salem.

Craig Commerford has been appointed as an assistant attorney general in the business transactions section of the general counsel division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Commerford received his J.D. from Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College. He served as a judicial clerk for the Multnomah County Circuit Court and a patent proofreader for a private Portland firm.

Youlee You has been appointed as a senior assistant attorney general in the appellate division of the Oregon Department of Justice. You received her J.D. from the University of Washington. She was a staff attorney at Metropolitan Public Defender before joining the appellate division of DOJ in 1992. She left in 1994 to become deputy bureau chief of the King County District Attorney’s Office and, subsequently, capital case staff attorney in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. In 2004, You joined the corrections litigation section of the trial division. She transferred to the appellate division in May 2006 and left briefly in August.

Ethan Hasenstein has been appointed as an associate attorney general in the government services and education section of the general counsel division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Hasenstein received his J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School. Previously, he was a clerk for the Nevada Supreme Court.

Jackie Sadker has been appointed as an assistant attorney general in the criminal and civil rights litigation section of the trial division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Sadker received her J.D. from the University of Virginia, where she was editor in chief of Virginia Law Weekly. After law school graduation, she clerked for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and was in private practice in Washington, D.C.

Michael Washington has been appointed as a senior assistant attorney general in the appellate division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Washington received his J.D. from Willamette University. He served as a deputy district attorney in Multnomah County and as chair of the Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision.

Stacie Beckerman has been appointed as an assistant attorney general in the appellate division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Beckerman received her J.D. with honors from Harvard University. During law school Beckerman served as an intern for the U. S. Attorney’s office for the District of Massachusetts. After law school graduation, she was in private practice in Washington, D.C., Boston and Palo Alto.

Kristin Bremer has joined the labor and employment practice group at Tonkon Torp. She will work with her former colleague, veteran employment lawyer Robert L. Carey, the new chair of the firm’s labor and employment practice. Bremer and Carey were both formerly with Barran Liebman. Bremer’s advisory and litigation experience has focused on matters of wage and hour law, sexual harassment, discrimination and claims under the ADA and the FMLA. Bremer graduated from Willamette University College of Law in 2003, where she was the symposium editor of the Willamette Law Review.

Brian M. Parrott has joined Cooney & Crew as an associate. Parrott’s primary areas of practice will focus on litigation, business transactions and health law. Previously, Parrott worked as a deputy district attorney at the Marion County district attorney’s office. Before attending law school, he worked in computer software support.

Gregory T. Lusby has become a shareholder with Arnold, Gallagher, Saydack, Percell, Roberts & Potter. Since joining the firm in 2002, Lusby’s practice has focused on litigation, including construction defects, business and real property disputes and insurance defense. The firm also announces the addition of Rebecca F. Schapira and Katherine G. Watkinson as associate attorneys. Schapira is a 2002 graduate of the Boston University School of Law. Before joining the firm, she practiced commercial real estate law in Boston. Her practice will include real estate and business transactions. Watkinson is a 2006 graduate from the University of Oregon School of Law, where she served as a member of the moot court board. Her practice will emphasize business law and estate planning.

Steven D. Nofziger has joined Garvey Schubert Barer as an associate in the firm’s Portland office. Nofziger practices in the areas of business, taxation and estate planning. He earned his J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law in 2006. He was a managing board member of the Oregon Law Review and worked as an extern in the Oregon Tax Court. Jill Holly received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law, where she was a comments editor for the Santa Clara Law Review. She served as an extern in the chambers of the Hon. Jeffrey S. White, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California and as a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, criminal division, in Oakland, Calif. Edward Impert received his law degree from Willamette University College of Law, where he was an executive editor of the Willamette Law Review. Impert was a summer associate with Brownstein, Rask, Sweeney, Kerr, Grim, DeSylvia & Hay in Portland, and an extern in the chambers of the Hon. Ronald M. Gould on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Nathan A. Schwartz Sykes has joined the Office of the Metro Attorney at Metro regional government as a senior attorney. He continues to practice labor and employment law for Metro and the Metropolitan Exposition-Recreation Commission, as well as entertainment law for the Oregon Convention Center, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center. Sykes previously worked at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt in their labor and employment group and at the U.S. Department of Labor in San Francisco.

Judith Giers and David Olsson announce the opening of their new appellate firm, Giers Olsson P.C. They began their careers in 1990 as law clerks for the Oregon Court of Appeals. Giers went on to become a shareholder at Harrang Long, and later of counsel to Hershner Hunter, in charge of the firm’s appellate practice. Olsson served as staff attorney and pro tem board member to the Oregon Employment Appeals Board for 12 years.

Miller Nash announces the addition of six new attorneys to the firm. Kathy J.S. Fritz joins the business department specializing in all aspects of healthcare law. Fritz served as general counsel and compliance officer for the physician and dental groups of Kaiser Permanente Northwest. She has served on a number of local community nonprofit boards, including Project Quest Integrative Health Center, Linnton Community Center and Oregon Nurses Association. She is a nurse and a lawyer, with degrees from South Dakota State University, OHSU and Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College. Elisa J. Dozono joins the firm as an associate in the litigation department, focusing on business litigation and government relations. Dozono has more than 11 years of experience in communications management and government relations, including positions
as corporate media manager for the Port of Portland, communications director for Mayor Vera Katz, media relations director for Gov. John Kitzhaber’s transition, and a producer for KATU television. Dozono received her law degree and certificate in general business law from Lewis & Clark Law School. John M. Quirk joins the firm’s tax group, focusing on taxation, health care and general corporate and business matters, with an emphasis on tax-exempt organizations and charitable giving. Quirk was a summer associate in the lead tax services division of Deloitte and Touche in Seattle. Before practicing law, he worked as an in-house accountant for Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. He is admitted to practice in Washington and Oregon. He earned his law degree at Seattle University School of Law and an LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law. William L. Rasmussen joins the firm as an associate, focusing on land use and real estate. Rasmussen interned with Merrill Lynch and Piper Jaffray financial management companies during his undergraduate years, interned with Sen. Ron Wyden and worked as a financial adviser with UBS Financial Services. Rasmussen was an active member of the Moot Court Honor Board at the University of Washington School of Law. Mike Ryan joins Miller Nash’s business group, specializing in corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and various corporate finance and capital market transactions. Before joining the firm, Ryan worked at Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee and is admitted to practice in Oregon and Wisconsin. He received his B.A in sociology from Indiana University and his law degree from Willamette University College of Law. Erik Van Hagen joins the firm as an associate in the litigation department. He previously served as a legal intern to the Washington House of Representatives and worked in the Oregon Legislature. He earned his law degree from the University of Washington School of Law, where he was executive notes and comments editor of the Washington Law Review.

Banking and creditor rights attorney Mark Rossi recently announced his move to Honolulu to become a vice chairman of the Bank of Hawaii. Lewis Horowitz (upper photo) has been elected to fill Rossi’s shoes at Lane Powell. Horowitz, currently vice president in charge of the firm’s Portland office, focuses his practice on tax planning and controversy. Chuck Riley (lower), chair of Lane Powell's trusts and estates practice group and a member of the firm's board of directors, will become vice president.

Portland litigation firm Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf has appointed Lynn R. Nakamoto as managing shareholder. Nakamoto has been with the firm for more than 17 years, and concentrates her practice on employment law and civil appeals. She replaces Lynn Stafford, who held the position for seven years. Stafford will continue to focus on complex commercial cases, including the areas of real estate, accounting malpractice and other business litigation. Nakamoto has served on the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners and the OSB Affirmative Action Committee. She is a past recipient of the Judge Mercedes Deiz Award, which recognized her outstanding contributions in promoting minorities in the legal profession and the community. Nakamoto also has served as cooperating counsel for the ACLU in Oregon.

Stacy Posegate has been appointed as an assistant attorney general in the condemnation, commercial and environmental litigation section of the trial division with the Oregon Department of Justice. Posegate received her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law. She has practiced with private firms in Los Angeles for the last six years.

Tonkon Torp has elected four attorneys to the partnership. Sonja L. Henning’s practice focuses on labor and employment law. Her litigation experience encompasses all areas of employment law including discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Before joining Tonkon Torp, she was general counsel at lucy.com. She was a professional athlete in the Women’s National Basketball Association and the American Basketball League, and served as president of the WNBA Players Association from 2001 to 2003. A graduate of Duke Law School, Henning currently serves on the board of Portland Public Schools. Litigator Steven D. Olson’s practice emphasizes labor and employment law. He has represented employers and individuals on matters ranging from gender discrimination and sexual harassment to breach of non-compete agreements. His litigation experience includes product liability, securities, corporate governance and business torts. He is a University of Minnesota Law School graduate. David J. Petersen practices in the real estate and land use practice group. He focuses on land use and local government law and represents clients in real estate purchase and sale transactions, commercial leasing and wind energy development. Petersen graduated from University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall Law School and practiced in California before joining Tonkon Torp in 2003. Robyn Ridler Aoyagi practices commercial litigation with an emphasis on appellate law. The Harvard Law School graduate clerked for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. In her appellate work, Ridler Aoyagi has experience in securities litigation and contract disputes.

McIntyre received her J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School. She was a law clerk in the appellate division for a year prior to working for a year with U.S. Department of Energy, Bonneville Power Administration.
