Lawrence Wobbrock, a Portland trial attorney, has joined the board of directors of Oregon Health Forum. Established in 1990, Oregon Health Forum publishes an independent health policy newsletter that deals with issues such as medical malpractice and also hosts educational seminars on leading health policy issues. Wobbrock will serve for a three-year term. Earlier, Charles Williamson, 2003 president of the Oregon State Bar, served on the board of Oregon Health Forum.

Jeanette Thomas (formerly Jeanette Cotting), an associate at Stoel Rives, was recently elected to the board of Oregon Women Lawyers, a nonprofit group that promotes professional advancement, comradeship and good fellowship among women members of the legal profession.

Daniel E. McCabe was elected president of the Federation of Exchange Accommodators (FEA), the national organization for the exchange industry. McCabe has conducted numerous investor seminars on real estate and construction law, liability and advanced principles of reverse and construction exchanges. He currently serves as IXG’s specialist in reverse and 1031 exchanges.

Richard W. (Dick) Olsen, vice president and general counsel of Shari’s Management Corp., has been elected chair of the OSB Corporate Counsel Section for 2003. Olsen has worked at Shari’s since 1993 and specializes in real estate and employment law.

Kevin Bechtel, vice president of research and development of Shari’s Management Corp., has been appointed to the Oregon Restaurant Association’s (ORA) board of directors. Bechtel, who has worked at Shari’s for a decade, brings more than 25 years of experience in restaurant management to the ORA board.

Oregon Minority Lawyers Association has elected its 2003 board of directors: Pam Veljacic (photo), co-chair; Anastasia Yu Meisner, secretary; Aruna Masih, member at-large and Akira Heshiki, member at-large. These individuals join Liani Reeves, co-chair, and David Giles, treasurer.

Diane L. Gruber was recently invited to give a speech on estate planning to the Hong Kong Club of Oregon. Gruber gave her speech in Mandarin Chinese, and handouts were printed with Chinese characters. She previously gave a similar presentation in Chinese to the Chinese Service Center for the elderly.

Bullivant Houser Bailey shareholder Stephen F. English has become a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. The induction ceremony took place at the annual meeting of the college in New York City. English has 29 years of trial practice and dispute resolution experience in state and federal courts in the Northwest. He has tried more than 100 cases and acted as lead counsel in the largest investment manager fraud case in U.S. history.

Stoel Rives attorney Ellen Hawes received a public service award from the Oregon New Lawyers Division (ONLD) of the OSB for her work on the Pro Bono Challenge as chair of the pro bono subcommittee. This award is presented to a member of the division who has made a substantial contribution to the public through efforts involving pro bono services, law-related education or similar activities. Hawes also volunteers pro bono legal services to the firm’s night clinic and immigration and asylum clinic.

Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW)-Portland recently elected Susan Glen as corporate secretary. Glen, a real estate and business attorney with Dunn, Carney, Allen, Higgins & Tongue, has been a member of CREW-Portland for five years.

Meg Goldberg, a mediator in Portland, was the recipient of the Oregon Mediation Association’s Mediator of the Year award at OMA’s annual conference Nov. 1, 2002. She was honored for her continuing advancement of mediation in Oregon, her work on the OMA newsletter and continuing work with the underserved and underrepresented populations in Oregon. Goldberg worked for legal services in New Mexico and Oregon before entering a full-time mediation practice in Portland. The majority of her practice is in the area of family mediation.
