Welcome to Law Practice Management Section Website

I am Fern Puls, the Chair of the Section and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Web Site of the Law Practice Management Section of the Oregon State Bar Association.

The focus of the Law Practice Management Section is, as always, to give our members the help and direction that we can for the management of the practice of law.  Our members are always on the on the lookout to identify resources that are available to assist our members in all areas of law practice, including technology, human resources, administration, marketing, and practical help about office operation.  We hope to be able to point you in the right direction and give you the information and access to resources that will help you in the day-to-day management of your practice.

We welcome your ideas and suggestions. The focus of the Law Practice Management Section is, as always, to give our members the help and direction that we can for the management of the practice of law.  If you have a request for help in a particular area, please don't hesitate to call any member of the Executive Committee; they will be happy to point you in the right direction to find the help.

If you are not already a member of the Section, I encourage you to sign up.  Your Section membership dues will help support the Section's quarterly newsletter and the information and the links that we are able to give you on this web site.  We've thoughtfully provided instructions on how to sign up.

Chair's Comments

The mission of the Law Practice Management Section is to provide resources to the law office practitioner (attorney or firm manager, and, as we all know, sometimes that position is combined) to assist in the administration and management of the firm, in a timely and effective manner. More than any other section, we are aware that "time is money", and we -- your fellow Oregon State Bar and OLMA members -- are committed to increasing your access to practical information that will help in the start-up, management, and, yes, even the retirement of a law firm and its members. How will we do this?

As any successful business, we want listen to our customers - you. We want to hear from you directly, through one of our executive committee members. That can be done either by phone or email, or heck, even personally, face-to-face.

We have expertise -- or the knowledge of what we don't know. We have fellow attorneys and law office administrators on the executive committee that come from a broad spectrum of law office management experience:

from the large firms to the small firms;

from the attorney that tries to do it all to the law office administrator specialist;

from the computer-savvy to the computer-challenged;

from the young practioner to the "more senior" among us.

We have products to make available to you - our newsletter, seminars, legal management and technology show. And we are developing new products.

Your executive committee has embraced the "short and sweet" approach, as we plan our upcoming activities:

1. Seminars. We are anticipating 1- 2, and -3 hour (at the most) seminars, rather than all-day. We want to get many speakers, focused on specific, tight topics. We want to get well-qualified speakers, but not incur significant room or travel costs. We will offer them in a low-cost venue -- either at the State Bar headquarters for the first 75 registrants, or also available by interactive phone connection or "streaming video" on the Internet. By aiming for smaller seminars, with one or two topics, there is the likelihood of more seminars being put together from your volunteer executive committee, rather than the all-day, blow-out seminar, with the attendant speaker and facility coordination problems. We will be advertising these seminars principally by email, both because of the expected shorter lead time, and to keep the section expenses (paid from your dues) down.

2. Newsletter. We are working with the ABA LPM section to offer selected articles from their newsletter. The ABA LPM searches the nation for the latest information in law office management, and also reminds us from time to time of the tried and true principles. We think that making this information available to our members would be an effective means of improving our law office management product.

3. Listserve. How many of you know all of the answers on how to run a law office? I thought so ... it is a continually evolving art. We can improve our knowledge by consulting with others, just as our clients do. A listserve for our members has been set up, to ask questions and share their experience and resources.  If you are a LPMS members, you received your welcome message, with instructions on how to send out.  If you need a reminder, please contact our webmaster: Evan Boone

4. Web page. We have a web page, hosted via the Bar's website: "www.osbar.org/5member/sections/lpm/lpms.htm [actually, if you are reading this, you are here!]. It give you basic information about the section, executive committee membership, etc. You'll find it expanding as the seminars and newsletter information increase -- For example, we'll be archiving our past issues on it, with a table of contents, so you can find that newsletter article you recall, but can't find laying about the office.

It will take a little while to get all of this in full swing, but we think it will be worth the wait. And I encourage anyone who has a question or suggestion to contact us.

We're here to help our members.  The Law Practice Management Section is open for business!

2003 Section Budget

2004 Section Budget; 2003 Summary

Section Mission

To assist sole practitioners and lawyers in small, medium size, and large law firms to develop better law practice and firm management skills.

To enable law firms to improve their profitability in a competitive environment.

To help lawyers and law firms adapt to technological change.

To assist lawyers and law firms to improve their client service and the attorney-client relationship.

To provide national law office management resources to members of the section.

To work closely with the Oregon Legal Management Association, the Professional Liability Fund, the Young Lawyers Section and the emerging Sole Practitioners and Small Firm Section in realizing such goals.

Managing your law business is just as important as practicing law.  If you can't stay in business, you can't help your clients.  For smaller firms, access to professional management and technology solutions may not be as accessible.  The Law Practice Management Section helps keep you up-to-date on what's available and provides CLE programs, written resources, and networking opportunities to help you manage your practice.

Administrative Errors - Administrative errors account for more than 60% of the malpractice claims made.  Better management systems can prevent many of these claims.  A system that is just right for the size and method of your practice is available and the Law Practice Management Section can put you in touch with the people who can help.

Networking - Sole practitioners and smaller offices can benefit from the networking resources through the Law Practice Management Section.  Learn from the experience of other similarly situated lawyers and gain new ideas for systems and technology that can help.  We co-sponsor CLE's with other sections and with the PLF.

Technology - The technology options available for a law office today can seem baffling and expensive.  There are lower cost options for smaller firms that are cost-efficient and productive.  The Law Practice Management Section provides helpful articles with reviews of current technology and systems to help the smaller practice.  These systems can level the playing field and allow you to globalize your practice just like the larger firms.

Resources - The Law Practice Management Section publishes a quarterly newsletter with timely articles addressing the latest issues in technology systems and management.  The section sponsors a technology CLE and other management CLE's and seminars to address current matters which may be beneficial for practice management.
