Cheyne was a valued and active mem- ber of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the Portland Estate Plan- ning Council, WealthCounsel and the OSB Taxation and Estate Administration sections. He also maintained a prominent position in the community, serving on the endowment committee for the American Rhododendron Society. He was the past president of the Tualatin Valley chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and served as a member of the procure- ment committee of OMSI. While in Cali- fornia he served on the board of managers of the Palomar YMCA, and was the chair of the board of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Debra, a son and stepson, brothers and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. John B. Lewis, a fixture of Forest Grove and the Washington County le- gal community, died June 7, 2016, at the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. He was 69. John Boyd Lewis was born June 16, 1946, in Forest Grove. He was raised and received his education in the Forest Grove community, having been a gradu- ate of the Forest Grove High School Class of 1964. Upon his high school graduation, he attended Portland State University, where he received his mas- ter’s degree in biology. He then attended Lewis & Clark Law School and earned his J.D. in 1975. Lewis had worked in the legal justice system as an attorney and later as a judge for Washington County. He served as a judge for 13 years until he retired in 2006, and then was a legal mediator for 10 years. He and his wife Linda were married June 1970. Following their marriage, they resided in Forest Grove until 1993, when they moved to their home in Gaston, where they had resided since. In addition to his wife, survivors in- clude a son and daughter, as well as three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. OCTOBER 2016 • OREGON STATE BAR BULLETIN 53
